Students in ANTH 201 Visualizing Humanity learn about photography, storytelling, and the power of controlling one's narrative. By critically observing the problematic ways in which cultural groups have been depicted, objectified and othered by anthropologists and documentary filmmakers, students become aware of the power dynamics inherent in these representations.
Students also learn to use the tools from visual anthropology to create their own representations. As part of their final project, student pairs connect with community members throughout the CEB to take their photo and conduct interviews. The result captures the CEB in portraits and stories.
