People in Arequipa aren’t really that conscious about the UV ray issues.
Those who are tend to forget to use protection against it. We want to know why if that is the case.
People don’t know much about the Fitzpatrick scale and how that affects the degree of protection one must get.
People don’t use sunscreen because it is too expensive and/or because they tend to forget about it.
People don’t use hats because it messes up their hair.
Females tend to be more conscious about protecting their skin than their male counterparts.
The first step on trying to get insights from as many people as possible is by surveying said people.
As our universe, we are considering any Arequipean citizen that has between 18 and 65 years of age, as this is the group of people that tends to be outside the most, either studying or going to work. We are not considering minors as their opinion could be skewed.
The open data project by the government gives us population data sorted by age groups, provided by INEI. This can be downloaded at https://www.datosabiertos.gob.pe/dataset/poblaci%C3%B3n-peru.
Using a small python jupyter notebook script and pandas, we could find info only from Arequipa province in the Arequipa department, and, even better, information only of people that are in the 18 to 65 years range.
The population size was then found to be 658,579 people.
Applying the sample size formula with a confidence level of 95% and an error of 9% (because of our inexpertise, we took the highest value within the recommended 1-9% range), we get a sample of at least 119 people.
Can we make it?
Do you believe that, in Arequipa city, people are informed enough regarding solar radiation consequences?
So far, every person surveyed thinks people are not informed enough about this issue.
(In a scale from 1 to 5) How important is protection against sun radiation for you?
In the scale proposed, 1 means "Not at all important" and 5 is "very important". As seen in the graph, most people consider this a very important issue, and no one considers it not important. This shows us that, within Arequipa, people care about being protected against sun radiation.
Do you check UV index in the city before sun exposure?
Most people, even when knowing about the risks that sun exposure has and considering protection against it very important, don't check UV indexes. Could this be because this information is not easily accesible?
Last month, how frequently have you used this products? (Left to right: sunscreen, hat or "sombrero", sun glasses. Blue: Never, Red: once or twice, Yellow: once a week, green: daily/every time I went outside)
As seen from the graph, sunscreen was the most used protection by far, with most people using it daily or every time they went outside. We do have suspicions that this info can be skewed. Still, a good portion of people don't use it enough.
Hat usage was evaded by most people, just like sunglasses. However, with this last one, all four categories had a similar amount of responses.
Has heat and radiation ever caused the following reactions in yourself? You can check more than 1. (From top to bottom: Fatigue and/or drowsiness, headaches, stress and/or irritability, sun burns, skin stains, none of the previous ones, eye irritation)
Over 70% of people have either experienced sunburns, fatigue and/or drowsiness and headaches from sun radiations. Our solution could try and focus within one of this consequences, as clearly a lot of people are affected.
(In case surveyed person had used a product to protect him or herself against radiation in the last week) Which products have you used to protect your skin against sun radiation last week? You can check more than 1 (From top to bottom: sunscreen, hat, "sombrero", sunglasses)
As an attempt to confirm previous data, we see that pretty much every person that had used a product to protect his or her skin against the sun has used sunscreen.
Hats and sunglasses are almost equally used, and "sombreros" are by far the least used. This is interesting, as "sombreros" provide more protection than simple hats, usually protecting the upperback that is very prone to sunburns.
(In case surveyed person had NOT used a product to protect him or herself against radiation in the last week) Why do you think you haven't used any product to protect your skin? You can check more than 1 option.
If last week people had not used any protection against the skin, but knew about the sun radiation consequences, we would like to know why is this the case when supposedely this person knows how bad the table can turn.
So far, we have had two reasons:
People are either forgetful or lazy.
People do not have much sun exposure.
The empathize step of the design thinking process MUST be finished by this week. To do this, we need to accomplish all of the following due on Saturday:
Survey people to gain more insights in a general, broad way, from as many people as possible.
Interview people to gain insights in a more concise way.
Interview at least one specialist. The best person to interview would be a dermatologists, but a medic could bring very useful information as well.
Build the empathy client map.
