I've decided to add a page on "flocks". For starters it has my latest photos clearly showing that the murmurations we have been seeing are tricolored blackbirds.
12/29/2024 Yesterday we saw a large flock of cowbirds at Long Marine Lab. At first we thought they might be some of the tricolored blackbirds that we have been watching in the evening.
Wow! It has been more than a year since I've made any updates. We have been really enjoying the murmurations of mostly Tricolored Blackbirds near our house. You can see videos of them at https://www.youtube.com/@charliemcdowell4406 .
You really must watch one of the videos at https://www.youtube.com/@charliemcdowell4406
A closeup showing the tricolor wings.
From May 1st to June 6th 2023 we drove coast to coast and back. Here are some of the birds we saw on that journey.
3/10/2023 My recent capture of a Hooded Merganser (below) with a crayfish promoted me to gather some of my other interesting photos of birds with their food.
3/4/23 We were lucky to catch a Hooded Merganser catching breakfast. I thought the outing deserved its own page.
December 17, 2022. I thought it would be fun to revisit my bird photos for 2022. Here they are with at most 6 per month,
December 5, 2022. I saw a large flock of wild turkeys with several toms displaying. I counted at least 35 in the flock. I also captured a couple of visitors to our "natural bird feeder" aka fuyu persimmon tree.
We spent the last week of October 2022 in Napili-Honokowai on Maui. We mostly went for the snorkeling but did enjoy several walks where we saw some nice birds. Most of these are introduced species. I believe the only native bird I photographed was a Wedge-tailed Shearwater chick in its burrow.
Today, October 8, 2022, I finally got around to adding more photos from two different trips to the Merced National Wildlife Refuge in February and November of 2021. The first featured HUGE flocks of birds (includes two videos at the end of the page) and the highlight of the second was a close-up view of a pair of White-faced Ibises doing battle.
Here is a sequence I took back in 2020 of a Great Blue Heron near our house helping us with gopher control.
Tuesday 8/10/2022 On one of my semi-regular walks with a friend along West Cliff I spotted two baby gulls and a Red-shouldered Hawk having breakfast.
Tuesday 7/12/2022 I haven't added any photos in a while, so here are two recent additions/sightings, a Golden Eagle pair and some not so small juvenile Great Horned Owls. Back on June 9th, I was treated to a Peregrine Falcon along the Ohlone Cliff trail at Wilder Ranch State Park.
As of March 7, 2022 I have completed a first pass over my bird photos.
As of 2/22/2022 I have completed my birds of prey section for photos taken prior to now.
Thursday 2/10/2022 I started down a road of adding more of my photos to this "site". As of 3/3/2022 I've gotten most of the big dramatic birds and added one page that is a rather hodgepodge collection of smaller birds. I'm really enjoying putting this together and if others get some enjoyment out of it, that's just an added bonus.
