If students post something disruptive or offensive in a discussion forum, it is important to address the issue quickly and dispassionately. Here are some steps you can take:
Take action: Depending on the severity of the disruption or offense, you may need to take further action, such as removing a student’s post, arranging a private meeting with the student, or even reporting the students’ behavior.
Be discreet: Talk to students who make disruptive posts privately. Address the issue more broadly only if absolutely necessary.
Address the behavior, not the person: Focus on the behavior that is causing the disruption or offense, rather than attacking the person.
Be clear and direct: Be clear and direct about the issue, and explain why the behavior is disruptive or offensive.
Provide a reminder of guidelines: If you see a pattern among your students, remind them of the guidelines for the discussion forum and what is expected of them.
Removing a disruptive post is your prerogative and responsibility. A disruptive post (offensive or not) can have consequences for all of your students, including the student who posted it.
