You could use one format, or a few different formats, but a central goal of Discussions in online learning is to build community and connection, and foster a learning community with shared values.
Start building community at the beginning of the term
Students ask each other or teaching team about course content and assignments
Engage the entire class in a conversation surrounding a topic, question or problem
Assigned roles where students engage in collaborative group projects
Students give each other direct feedback and support
For collaboration or in conjunction with other digital tools, like shared documents or slides
