Video can make a discussion less formal and more personal, which can help build community. Video discussions are particularly useful for introductions because they establish faces and voices at the beginning of a course. Video discussion tools often contain simple and playful video-editing functions, which can make discussions more engaging.
Video posts should be short (no more than a few minutes). Set a time limit, both in your prompt and (if possible) in the video discussion settings.
Include a video of yourself in your prompt to show your students that you’re committed to the format.
Allow students to reply to video posts with video or text.
I'm so glad you're here.
Take a moment to introduce yourself to me and to your classmates in a short video (1 minute or so). Use the record/upload media button in the menu above to make your video and post it. (Don't make us download your video to watch it; be sure it's embedded in your post.)
There are two requirements: tell us what you prefer to be called and share one or two non-school things about yourself. Introduce us to your dog. Play a little tune for us. Show us your prized comic book collection or your max bench press rep. Whatever! It's up to you.
Once you post your video, reply to other people's introductions, too. Reply to one person who mentions a common interest or experience and one person who doesn’t—maybe you can find something you do have in common.
Find and video-record a native plant in your area. In your video include the plant's common and scientific name, the general environment where you found it in and 3 fun facts about the plant. Your video should be 1-3 minutes long.
Comment on 2 videos. In your response include:
Whether the plant is native to your area
A question you have about the plant
A fact you know (or have recently learned) about the plant
