Theatre Assessment Information
Students do not need to have prior theatre experience to be considered for CATA’s theatre program. Please reference the linked rubric below to see how your audition materials will be assessed.
The Theatre Academy will be accepting applications for the 2025-2026 Freshmen Theatre Class. Students accepted into the Theatre Academy will take core theatre classes specializing in acting, acting methods, theatre history, theatre literature, directing and stage movement. Students have the opportunity to take elective classes in choir, band, songwriting, tech theatre, physical theatre, dance, apparel design, and film making.
Applications will be accepted in a two-part process: The Pre-Screen and the In-Person Auditions and Interview.
Pre-screen Auditions are due February 23rd.
The Pre-Screen:
Students looking to enter the theatre arts pathway must submit a pre-screen self tape containing the following:
PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY
A 1-2 minute monologue performed from memory, from any source (play, musical, film, self-written, etc.).
A 16-32 bar cut of a song from musical theatre. Please see the videos at the bottom of this page for help in picking the best material for your audition and self-tape. Your pre-screen tape should not include the entire song.
At the start of your self-tape, please slate yourself, stating your name and the material you will be performing. For example: "Hello, my name is __________ and I will be performing a monologue from ____________ and a song from __________." (You can do the song first if you prefer.)
At the end of your self-tape, please restate your name.
Following the pre-screen process, you may be asked to attend an in-person audition on March 1 or 2.
If chosen to proceed to the in-person audition and interview, you will have approximately 6-8 minutes to complete your audition. Please have the following prepared:
Monologue: Your monologue must be between 1-2 minutes, must be memorized, and can be from anywhere (play, musical, movie, self-written, etc..). Please begin your audition by saying your full name. (This should be the same monologue as your pre-screen self-tape.)
Song: Your song can be a 16-32 bar cut, part of the song, or be the entire number based on your choosing. You may do it without accompaniment or you can sing to a karaoke track (do not sing with other voices). It is recommended that your song is from a musical but it can also be a genre of your choosing. (Again, this should be the same song you prepared for your self-tape.)
Interview: Please be prepared to answer the following questions:
What does theatre mean to you?
What does the word community mean to you and how have you been a member of a community?
Does art change culture or does culture change our art and why do you think what you do?
How do you think you could be good fit for CATA and how do you think CATA can be good for you and/or why are you applying to CATA? (Think what you bring to the CATA table.)
Is there anything else I should know about you? This can include any specific interests you may have, hobbies, favorite type of candy, what your favorite movie is, or your favorite musical...
4. Technical Theatre Portfolio (optional): Please submit a portfolio with projects you helped with. These can include, but are not limited to:
Costume design
Make up design
Set design
Lighting design
