Technical Theatre

Technical Theatre is now its own pathway branch of the theatre program. While all theatre and dance students are required to take Technical Theatre I while at CATA for their class requirements, students may also choose Technical Theatre as a specific Performing Arts pathway. 

Students who take classes in technical theatre will go on to study scenic design and props construction, lighting design, stage management, and many other facets which support all of our performing arts productions. 

Theatre Academy students are required to take Technical Theatre I during their sophomore year, while Dance Academy students are required to take Technical Theatre I during their Freshman year. 

Students who choose Technical Theatre as their pathway can develop a focus in any of the following areas: 

• Costuming

• Lighting

• Props

• Production Management/Advertisement/Media

• Scenic Design

• Sound

• Stage Management

Tech Theatre Pathway students will still have acting courses with their performance peers (and are still able to perform in shows), but will need to take more technical theatre electives for their pathway completion. The required technical theatre courses will depend upon what the student's area of focus is/are (you can have up to two). These courses include but are not limited to Apparel II, Apparel III--Advanced Specialization, Technical Theatre II, Play Production Honors, Advanced Specializations in Design, and Peer Tutoring for either Ms. DePietro or Ms. Daniels.

Tech Theatre Pathway students are also expected to be on at least one major running crew each semester--even if they are not in a tech theatre course for that semester.

**All tech theatre courses are available to the entire student body of CATA except Advanced Specialization.** A student does NOT have to be in a performing arts academy to take a tech theatre course.
