Location: Unit 5A5 or 5A6
Team Structure:
Junior resident is usually on 5A5 with staff, NP, and pharmacy
Attending Physician is first contact for Switchboard during weekdays
Cardiology residents support Ward 5A5 during weeknights, weekends, and holidays but do not rotate on the ward
Patient Load: 12-18 patients (sometimes more)
Common Cases:
Revascularized ACS or those awaiting CABG
NSTEMI/UA awaiting cath
Arrhythmia management
Heart failure decompensation
Weekdays (8:00 AM - 4:00 PM):
Ward 5A5: Attending Physician is first contact
Ward 5A6 & Inpatient Consults: Cardiology resident is first contact (Attending Physician is second)
Cardiology residents may be absent Tuesday afternoons (AHD), Thursday afternoons (clinic), or post-call
Evenings, Weekends & Holidays:
All pages for Ward 5A5, Ward 5A6, and Inpatient Consults go to the CICU team pager (Jr Resident, first contact)
Cardiology resident (second contact), Attending Physician (third contact)
8:45 - 8:50 AM: Rapid multidisciplinary rounds
9:00 AM: Team rounds (coordinate with your staff)
Throughout the Day:
Patient assessments & follow-ups
Work on discharge summaries
Address consults and new admissions
Discuss expectations & learning goals with your attending
Evening: Handover and follow-ups as needed
