Obtain a letter from your Program Director outlining your good standing, approval of the elective, and include the exact dates of the elective.
A. Connect Care
Alberta Health Services (AHS) uses an electronic patient records management system called Connect Care. To gain access, you must complete an online training module and associated privacy agreements. If you have not received information about Connect Care training, please contact the AHS Edmonton Academic Medicine team at EDM.AcademicMedicine@albertahealthservices.ca. The following resources may be helpful:

B. Pager
You will need a pager for this elective which you can borrow from the U of A PGME office located in the Zeidler Ledcor Centre, Level 2, room 76. The PGME office will send you an email one week before the block start date with your pager pickup appointment time. If you do not receive an email please contact pgemail@ualberta.ca. After receiving your pager, please email the number to me so I can update your contact information in the call schedule.
At the end of your elective, please return your pager to the PGME office. Their hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, and they are closed for lunch from 12:00 - 1:00 pm. A drop box for pagers is also available outside the office entrance.
C. Swipe Card
You will also need an AHS hospital access swipe card for this elective. When you pick up your pager from PGME, you will also receive a security clearance form. Do not sign this until instructed to do so by security personnel at the Protective Services Office.
Take the form to the Protective Services Office in the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre (WMC, the central building of the UAH complex), Level 0, room 0H1. To reach the office, first locate the North Glass Elevator on the main floor (Level 1) of WMC; the elevator is on the north end of the cafeterias near the information desk and donations office. Take the elevator down to Level 0 or use the stairwell accessible through a door in the large mirrored wall. When exiting the stairwell, the office will be located immediately on your right. Their hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, and they are closed for lunch from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.
At the end of your elective, please return your swipe card to the Protective Services Office.
On your first day, please inform your attending physician and/or the Cardiology senior resident of your pager/swipe card pickup appointment and temporary absence from service. This process should take about one hour or less.
D. Parking
If you will be driving, find an AHS parking map attached. The lots operated by the U of A are generally less expensive than the AHS lots. U of A lots near the hospital are listed here. We recommend Lot L, which has free electrical sockets for plugging in your vehicle in winter. Payment for the U of A lots is collected through Honk. Street parking around the hospital is either short-term or requires a permit. Free parking is available in residential areas beyond the permitted areas to the east and south, about a 15 - 20 minute walk from the hospital.
E. Attire
For residents on the CICU/Triage rotation, trainees wear scrubs provided by the hospital. Ask one of the local residents for directions to the scrubs pickup location on your first day. For all other rotations, trainees wear business casual.
Please review the AHS PPE website for current masking and eye protection recommendations as well as AHS PPE donning and doffing guidelines.
F. To Bring
Please bring your white lab coat, ID badge from your home hospital or institution, and stethoscope. You may also find callipers helpful for interpreting ECGs.
