Pediatrics Research Funding Resources

WCHRI / DoP Grants and Awards:


Funding of up to $750 is available for in-training members to share their research outcomes in women and/or children’s health. Research outcomes supported through this program include in-person (oral or poster) abstract presentations at conferences and scientific sessions or publication in peer-reviewed journals. This funding program is non-competitive and offered as a benefit of WCHRI membership.

Who's Eligible? - those registered in a full-time, thesis based, graduate program in a health-related discipline leading to a master's or a doctoral degree, or those employed full-time in a postgraduate program of research (postdoctoral/clinical fellows, resident or sub-specialty resident), or a WCHRI Summer Studentship awardee.


This funding opportunity is operated by the Department of Pediatrics and funded by the generous support of the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation through the Women and Children's Health Research Institute. General Pediatric Residents can access up to $1,000 (plus an additional $780 as an in-kind contribution for WCHRI Biostatistics Services, if relevant) to carry out an independent research project. The proposed work must be within the initial stages of development and should be within the applicant's ability to carry out independently, within the time available, and under the guidance of the proposed supervisor(s)/mentor(s). Awardees may hold this award once only. Funding is available on a competitive basis. 

Who's Eligible? General Pediatric Residents. Applicants will be eligible to apply during the first year of their residency only. 


The WCHRI Postdoctoral Fellowship Program supports outstanding postdoctoral candidates seeking training under the supervision of WCHRI academic members who will provide a training environment that specifically focuses on advancing women and/or children’s health. Successful candidates must demonstrate how this award will enable them to further their career goals in the area of women and/or children’s health. These awards are valued at up to $40,000 per year and may be held for a maximum of two years.

Who's Eligible? - Postdoctoral Fellows.


This program aims to encourage a new generation of talented, engaged young researchers to pursue careers in women’s and/or children’s health. Students receive direct experience working on specific research projects under the guidance of WCHRI academic members for three or four months between May and August. WCHRI members (in training and supervisors) from all departments and disciplines whose research is relevant to women’s and/or children’s health are encouraged to apply. Funding of up to $1,300 per month is offered.

Who's Eligible? - Undergraduate students (including medical education students) registered in a recognized full-time degree program at the time of application. 


The WCHRI Graduate Studentship Program offers competitively funded trainee support to outstanding students who are engaged in a full-time, thesis-based graduate-level program of study at the University of Alberta. The award is valued at up to $18,000 per year and may be held for up to two years. Students and their supervisors from all faculties/departments and disciplines researching issues related to women and/or children’s health are encouraged to apply.

Who's Eligible? - Those registered in a full-time, thesis-based, graduate program in a health-related disciple leading to a Master's or Doctoral degree at the time of application. 


The Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), in partnership with the Department of Pediatrics, is pleased to offer a research-intensive pediatric residency training stream for residents with advanced research training and/or demonstrated aptitude. This stream is called Trainee Researcher in Pediatrics (TRIP), aims to support future pediatrician-scientists and will provide trainees with:

Who's Eligible? - Residents who have successfully entered the Core stage of their residency and demonstrated strong potential as a future pediatrician-scientist.


Education Awards:


The E.W. Gauk Scholarship in Pediatric Neurology Research is awarded annually to a resident in pediatric neurology or adult neurology program whose major field of study is concerned with neurological disorders of children.


Awarded to a Pediatric Neurology resident physician with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in any year in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in Pediatric Neurology research. Preference is given to a resident physician with a demonstrated interest in conducting pediatric research in Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) and/or participating in conferences, further training, or workshops related to this research area.


To be awarded annually to a third or fourth year undergraduate medical student with an interest in pediatrics, a pediatric resident or a pediatric graduate resident. This award is for travel to conferences, symposia, third world medical experience or educational activity that relates to pediatrics. 


Awarded annually to one or more learners enrolled in MD, PhD, pediatric specialty, subspecialty or fellowship training at the University of Alberta whose research or work relates to pediatric hypoplastic left heart syndrome and/or pediatric congenital heart defects.


Awarded to a resident with satisfactory academic standing registered full-time in the Pediatric Residency Program. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated contribution to the pediatric program. Preference given to senior general pediatric residents.


Awarded annually to a General Pediatric Resident or a Pediatric Subspecialty Resident with an interest and involvement in global health or an innovative program in child health.

The WCHRI Learning Session (formerly Lunch & Learn) series provides members with useful, practical and timely exposure to a range of topics important to their research. While some presentations are specific for trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents) or certain grant competitions, many are suitable for our junior and senior faculty.
