Fund for Undergraduate Medical Education - FUME

About: The mission and purpose of FUME is to provide funding for medical student-initiated projects that benefit undergraduate medical education, particularly those that directly benefit students across all years of the MD program at the University of Alberta. We strive to finance larger student-led initiatives in the MD program which are not otherwise supported by existing financial resources from the Medical Students’ Association or Class Council.

The FUME Committee: The FUME committee is made up of seven members, including six medical students and one faculty member, usually the Dean of OAW. We meet to discuss the finances available, evaluate previous projects, as well as discuss and vote on proposal submissions for the current FUME period.

When is it?: FUME Applications are run twice per year. Once in the fall, in November and a second round in April.

Please make sure all proposals follow the mission and terms of FUME, mainly:

1.  Funding proposals for projects may ONLY be submitted by medical students at the University of Alberta. All current medical students are eligible to apply.

2. To provide funding for medical student initiated projects that benefit undergraduate medical education for medical students at the University of Alberta.

3. Projects should benefit students from all years of the program, from pre-clerkship to clerkship. We also strive to support projects based around Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).

Proposed projects can cover facilities, resources, programs and more. For example, FUME has funded books for the Anti-Racism Book Club, menstrual products for the MSA lounge, and Stand-up desks for the DL rooms. We’ve also updated furniture in the MSA Lounge and Fishbowl recently!
