Fund for Undergraduate Medical Education - FUME

About: The mission and purpose of FUME is to provide funding for medical student-initiated projects that benefit undergraduate medical education, particularly those that directly benefit students across all years of the MD program at the University of Alberta. We strive to finance larger student-led initiatives in the MD program which are not otherwise supported by existing financial resources from the Medical Students’ Association or Class Council.

The FUME Committee: The FUME committee is made up of medical students and faculty. We meet to discuss the finances available, evaluate previous projects, as well as discuss and vote on proposal submissions for the current FUME period.

FUME Applications are opened once per semester.

Please make sure all proposals follow the terms of reference and adjudication criteria of FUME, namely:

Terms of Reference

• To provide funding for medical student-initiated projects that benefit undergraduate medical education (UME) and in particular directly benefit students across all years of the MD Program at the University of Alberta.

• To finance larger student-led initiatives in the MD Program which are otherwise not supported by existing financial resources from the Medical Students’ Association (MSA) or the Class Council. In cases where projects are eligible for support from multiple funding sources, the project(s) should make every possible effort to seek support from MSA or Class Council before accessing FUME.

Criteria:

Impact: Does this proposal directly benefit medical students across all years of the UME Program?

Financials: Has the applicant provided evidence of attempting to get funding from the MSA or Class Council first?

Sustainability: Is the timeline realistic, and is there a plan for the project to continue or have a lasting effect?

Alignment: Does this project represent the UME program well to the university and the public?

Budget Utilization: Does the budget focus on items that can be reused or provide a lasting benefit to the student body?

Proposed projects can cover facilities, resources, programs and more. For example, FUME has funded books for the Anti-Racism Book Club, menstrual products for the MSA lounge, and Stand-up desks for the DL rooms.
