Critical Care and Trauma Club

Critical Care and Trauma club creates opportunities for medical students to learn more about acute and critical care medicine. Throughout the year, we coordinate shadowing opportunities in the Intensive Care Unit at the University of Alberta Hospital, as well as plan on having mini-lectures this year about interesting topics taught by critical care physicians. We also provide 1-2 clinical skills workshops run by physicians who teach critical care procedures such as intubation and central line insertions. Of course, no club is complete without pizza lunch talks! We have hosted intensive care doctors and trauma surgeons who are happy to talk about their careers as well as teach some clinical pearls before hitting the wards. Look out for emails about specific dates and times for events!

Events:

ICU shadowing - throughout the year, open to all students, with a limitation of one shadowing shift per semester.

Clinical skills workshop - teaching the basics of critical care skills, with 24 selected students alternating between stations of airway management and intubation, central lines, ultrasound skills, and more.

Introduction to the ICU Lunch Talk (held September-October) - An introduction to medical practice in an intensive care setting from an experienced intensivist (Dr. Lau) and trauma team lead.

Mini-Lectures (about 2 throughout the year) – Interactive lectures by Dr. Lau surrounding different topics often not covered during year 1 and 2, that are sure to make your clerkship years run even smoother ;)
