Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) UofA Chapter

Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) is an international not-for-profit organization committed to supporting women and minority surgeons at various stages of training - from medical school through retirement. At the U of A chapter, we host events for medical students to find a community for sharing experiences, learning best practices, and developing new skills. We also serve as a liaison with the international AWS organization to bring unique opportunities and perspectives to U of A medical students. We are lucky to have a large team of women in surgery at U of A supporting our chapter.

The goal of our group is to support aspiring surgeons or those wanting to explore surgery with representative mentors (including women surgeons and those supporting women surgeons). This is a perspective that is often missing in the surgery-related events, and from medicine as a whole. We hope to spark important conversations amongst students, residents, and staff to create a network of advocacy and support for women in surgery.
