Anti-Racism Book Club

Founded in 2020 by Anulika Nwakaeze and Allison Rau (MD2022), the Anti-Racism Book Club (ARBC), in partnership with the Black Medical Students Association (BMSA), is a book club for medical students and faculty that meets approximately twice per semester. We foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment in which to discuss literature and other media related to racism, White privilege and other critical topics. We understand that these discussions may be challenging and uncomfortable for some, but we also recognize the need to have an open space to address these systemic issues.

Despite the name, the ARBC has not been limited to just books! In the past we have discussed movies, documentaries and podcasts. Some examples of past book club topics:

● Desmond Cole’s “The Skin We’re In”

● “Can a DNA Test Make Me Native American?”, episode of the “All My Relations” podcast

● “13th”, documentary directed by Ava DuVernay

● Yaa Gyasi’s “Transcendent Kingdom”

● Joshua Whitehead’s “Jonny Appleseed”

The Anti-Racism Book Club also has a library of books available for medical students to borrow. To view a list of the books available, click here.
