Jacob Maydanyk's first illustrations of Uncle Shtif Tabachniuk appeared in the 1915 edition of the Canadian almanac Ілустрований Калєндар Новин – 1915 [The Illustrated News Almanac Novyn – 1915]. Uncle Shtif became so popular that in 1918 Maydanyk published his first almanac of humour, КАЛЄНДАР ШТІФА ТАБАЧНЮКА на рік - 1918 [Shtif Tabachniuk's Almanac for the year 1918]. Jacob wore the hat of an author, illustrator, and editor and invited other artists and writers to contribute additional pieces. He intended to publish a serialized yearly collection of humorous stories and comics. but only end he only issued 7 almanacs and one play dedicated to the antics of Uncle Shtif.

In 1930, ВУЙКОВА КНИГА [UNCLE'S BOOK] appeared on the shelves of Frank Dojacek's Ukrainian Booksellers & Publishers Ltd. on Main Street in Winnipeg. The 84-page comic book was one of the first of its kind in Canada. The collection of comic strips featured never-before-published stories about the famous Ukrainian Canadian hero Uncle Shtif Tabachniuk. In the same book, Jacob Maydanyk also unveiled Nasha Meri, a female counterpart to Uncle Shtif. This graphic memoir was inspired by Maydanyk's experiences as an immigrant trying to navigate his new homeland on the Canadian prairies. In 1974, a revised edition was published with a blue cover and three new comic strips added to the end.

An English translation of the first edition is now available for a new generation of fans.
