DESCRIPTION:
This is the first ever published illustration of the character Vuiko Shtif Tabachniuk [Uncle Steve Tabachniuk]. He is hunched over a desk writing a letter. The illustration accompanied a faux letter from Vuiko Shtif to his wife and children, waiting for him in Ukraine.

This illustration is of a young man lying on the ground under two trees on the edge of a village. He is surrounded by people. A woman is bandaging his head. The young man, and two of the women are wearing embroidered shirts. The title is hand drawn and the central image is bordered all around with a frieze of vines and chains. This was the first illustration Maydanyk proposed. An alternate one was chosen (See MA-0002)

"This will be the cover illustration for our kalendar. This work is known to all in Canada - it is by the painter Jacob Maydanyk. The illustration shows Jesus crying on the battlefield over the destruction and corpses of fallen soldiers. The coats of arms of Ukraine and Canada are depicted within the border, as well as an old church and farmhouse. In the foreground we see an old man representing the old past year, and a starving young boy representing the new year "rich" with hunger and ruin." (Translation)

DESCRIPTION:
This illustration is the iconic image of Vuiko Shtif Tabachniuk waving the "dulia" - his fist with the thumb laced through that first two fingers. It is a symbol of defiance. This image first appeared in print on the cover of the July 31, 1927 issue of Вуйко -[Vuiko/Uncle] - a comics insert found in The Ukrainian Canadian and The Canadian Farmer.

Following the first appearance this image appeared in all of the subsequent issues of Vuiko, as well as in his almanacs (1928,1929,1930,1931, 1958). It was also the cover image for his 1930 comic book "Вуйкова книга" [Vuikova knyha/Uncle's Book].
