Jacob Maydanyk immigrated to Canada in 1911, hoping to earn enough money to return to Europe and study art in Paris. But his dreams were dashed with the outbreak of World War I. Applying his artistic talents, he carved out a niche for himself as a cartoonist and an iconographer. He became one of the most prolific Ukrainian Canadian artists of the early 20th century.
