Start great by planning your CIL success: Do the eClass Orientation first and early once you join the CIL. Remember, you can't submit any other claims whose requirements you already meet until your Orientation claim is submitted and approved.
Add cil@ualberta.ca to the contact list in your UAlberta email account (avoid having important messages sent to your junk mail!)
Keep your CIL profile updated, especially your expected date of convocation. If your expected date of convocation changes, email cil@ualberta.ca with your new date.
Make claims for the CIL requirements you complete as you complete them or, at minimum, at the end of each term.
Keep a journal or notes as you go through the program requirements so that you have material to draw on for your capstone project.
When writing your co-curricular reflections, follow the guidelines in "A Short Guide to Co-curricular Reflection", located at the bottom of this page. Write and save your reflections outside of the CIL portal and paste them into your claim, since logging out of the CIL portal before submitting your claim does not save your work in the portal.
Connect with us if you have questions. Email us at cil@ualberta.ca or book an advising appointment online from the Resources page.
Join the CIL Facebook group! This is a private group. We post announcements about the program and opportunities for CIL students and CIL alumni.
IF you want to take the 15 hours of intercultural communication training (ICT), take it one year or the second last semester before you expect to convocate.
IF you make an Intercultural Experience claim for study abroad, include 13 additional days to your days abroad to account for the mandatory pre-departure orientation. One additional day is given if you attend the in-person pre-depature event. If you are still short of the 6-week threshold, you can make up for it by working or volunteering with an approved cross-cultural agency in Canada at a rate of 16.5 hours to make up one equivalent week of study abroad or by writing a reflection on your time abroad that was outside of your study.
