Dr. Elizabeth "Betsy" Kean
Dr. Betsy Kean is a strong public voice for improving educational outcomes in science for women, persons of color, and other marginalized groups. From 1974-88, she directed the Chemistry Tutorial Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, pioneering how to increase the academic success of underrepresented students. From 1989-1996, as a tenured faculty member in education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she worked with classroom teachers to improve K-12 science teaching and led NSF-supported interdisciplinary teams in systemic change. In 1996, she joined the faculty at California State University-Sacramento, where she designed teaching innovations and mentored young women in becoming leaders. As an emerita faculty (since 2006), Kean continues to build communities that create equitable education practices and improve educational systems currently failing our most vulnerable students.
