INTASC Standard #1: Learner Development—The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
INTASC Standard #2: Learning Differences—The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.
Standard Interpretation:
The teacher will have comprehensive knowledge of various learning needs and development of their students and will be prepared to set high expectations for the success of all students. Teachers will support cognitive, social and emotional, linguistic, and physical needs of students to further the learning process of all students. Teachers will demonstrate an understanding of diverse cultures and communities to differentiate learning for students in a variety of formats and purposes.
My certification in Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and Substance Abuse equipped me with the knowledge about these various topics, why it is important for my education as a future educator to know the warning signs, and the role I have to play in my students overall well-being.
This certificate demonstrates my competence of the Teaching Standard for Achieving Expectations because it shows my understanding about how critical it is to my students' "social-emotional success" to be able to recognize warning signs and act accordingly.
The certification course helped educate me of pervasive this issue is in youths and this benefits the future students I will have by giving them a teacher invested in their success, not just academically but also in their overall well-being as individuals.
My certification in Dyslexia equipped me with the knowledge about the characteristics of dyslexia, how to identify it, and many effective strategies I can use in the classroom to best teach students who have this disorder.
