READING 1 (6th Grade) Lesson Plans for January 8th to January 12th, 2018


6.3.R.1 Students will compare and contrast stated or implied purposes of authors writing on the same topic in grade-level literary and/or informational texts.

6.3.R.2 Students will evaluate how the point of view and perspective affect grade-level literary and/or informational text.

6.3.R.3 Students will analyze how key literary elements contribute to the meaning of the literary work: • setting • plot • characters (i.e., protagonist, antagonist) • characterization • theme • conflict (i.e., internal and external)



Monday, January 8, 2018

Assignment: Students will read the short story A DAY’S WAIT by Ernest Hemingway. Pre-reading activity will include “making connections” (the reader imagines how they might react to the character’s dilemma). Upon completion of reading, students will review vocabulary, answer questions that identify details and interpret situations.

Objective: Students will expand vocabulary and reasoning skills by improving their ability to making relevant inferences.

Assignment: Character Questionnaire from A DAY’S WAIT. Analyze a character by examining the character’s actions, speech, appearance, thoughts, and effects on other people.

Objective: Answering questions in this Character-Analysis Questionnaire will help the student analyze the character of Schatz.

Assignment: From A DAY’S WAIT: 4 Vocabulary and Comprehension questions; Using 3 new words in a sentence, 3 written response questions.

Objective: Assessment of retention of information and comprehension.


Friday, January 12, 2017:

Assignment: Students will read the short story FISH CHEEKS by Amy Tan. Pre-reading activity will include recalling/brainstorming an embarrassing situation (like the character in the story.)
