At Tuckswood, we intend for our pupils to gain a solid and enduring understanding of the world around them. Our curriculum is carefully designed so that pupils revisit key concepts regularly and build upon them as they progress through the school. Pupils are encouraged to be curious and ask questions, and are supported to convey their ideas scientifically using explicitly-taught vocabulary. Pupils develop their disciplinary skills through regular and progressive exposure to the five types of science enquiry; each enquiry task is designed to build upon previous disciplinary knowledge and consolidate understanding of substantive concepts. In each topic, pupils are introduced to a key scientist who has contributed to the field in order to expose pupils to the process of how science knowledge is obtained. We also provide opportunities for pupils to meet real-life scientists and take part in aspirational science events. Through these measures, we aim to help our pupils to see themselves as successful scientists and to consider a future career in science.
Subject Enrichment
Science units are packed with opportunities to investigate and explore various scientific phenomena, with engaging activities such as examining a pig heart. Pupils love visiting the planetarium in Key Stages 1 and 2. During Science Week, pupils take part in virtual live lessons, spend an afternoon exploring the work of famous female scientists, and are encouraged to engage in Science at home by taking part in our Science Selfie competition.
