At Tuckswood Academy and Nursery we value the creative curriculum. We believe that exposure to the arts produces creative, imaginative and skilled thinkers. Through carefully planned topic work from Nursery to Year 6, children develop their Art skills in areas such as; drawing, textiles, sculpture, painting including fine art, print, and collage. By engaging and challenging pupils in a high-quality art and design education, we are equipping them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.
As pupils develop through the creative curriculum offered here at Tuckswood, they will develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design through their learning about other artists or art movements which aids pupils' understanding of Artists, history and contribution to culture.
Each year group will teach the areas of Art identified in the school’s long term plan to ensure coverage of statutory knowledge and skills.
The school’s Art progression of skills will be used to identify the learning objectives for each year group, in line with the school’s raised expectations.
Cross-curricular learning
We stimulate pupils’ curiosity and sustain their interest through cross curricular links with our topics, as well as pupil’s own interests and environment.
We give high priority to pupils’ experimentation with ideas and media, allowing opportunities to review practical work to develop specific skills, supported by inspiring examples by other pupils.
ARTIST Launch
Each overview will begin with a focused session about an Artist to engage and motivate the children. This will also act as a ‘knowledge harvest’ allowing teachers to assess children’s existing knowledge and skills in order to adapt planning and ensure appropriate levels of challenge for all children.
At the end of each overview children’s work will be celebrated through a mini exhibition in the ART Hub.
Exploring the work of great artists
We value the work of great artists in both helping us to learn about periods in history and artistic techniques, as well as inspiring our own pieces of art.
To ensure our children are exposed to a broad range of artists from different periods and styles, we have developed a long term plan through which each year group studies the work of at least three artists
