Young Musician Competition                   22nd November 2025

SO MUCH MUSICAL TALENT IN TOWCESTER - What a day filled with music and song from Towcester's young people. Nearly 50 of them aged between 8 and 16 took part in the Rotary Club of Towcester's YOUNG MUSICIANS COMPETITION at the Nicholas Hawksmoor School. A full day of music and song judged by international renowned performer and musician Lincoln Noel and well known actress Alison Pargeter, both of whom gave each performer positive advice on their individual performances.

A great experience for these young people who are developing their musical talent.

This is part of a series of the annual Rotary Youth Competitions, more information available on the ROTARY CLUB OF TOWCESTER 's web site...www.towcester-rotary.org.uk. These competitions give our young people  the chance to express themselves.

Rotary Young Leadership Award  RYLA

Rotary Young Leadership Award – (RYLA) – candidate Alisha Harkin, who was sponsored by the Club at this year’s RYLA course at Grafham Water, gave a presentation to the Club on her experience at the week-long course. She said she learnt many new skills, but more importantly made, what she considers, to be lifelong friendships with the other candidates who came from all over districts 1070 and 1080. Being the youngest at 18, didn’t faze her, as she enjoyed all of the activities, team building, developing friendships and the many other activities from night walks to business development. She said it was hard and stretched her capabilities, but she classed it as one of the best weeks of her life and has taken so much from it in her personal development

Alisha, who is currently on a gap year before going to university, hopes to become a ‘fast-jet’ pilot. She has won a scholarship during which she hopes to achieve her ambition. She agreed that going on the RYLA course has given her added confidence and skills that will be useful in her life as her career develops.

'WIDE EYED AND BUSHY TAILED' - that's what happened a week ago as 38 candidates aged between 18 and 25 arrived at Grafham Water Centre for a week long adventure, not knowing what to expect. All had been sponsored by Rotary Clubs from all over the Districts 1070 and 1080. But 7 days later, after a week of intensive activities, which included sailing, canoeing, rock climbing, orienteering and an insight into business management, the eyes were not so 'wide' and their 'tails' were definitely sagging as 38 weary, but very happy candidates departed, having successfully completed the RYLA course.

This stands for ROTARY YOUNG LEADERS AWARD and helps young adults gain confidence in communication skills and building friendships, both necessary life skills.

RYLA candidates are sponsored by individual Rotary Clubs and is international in it's concept. Comments from previous entrants "This has been lifechanging."....."The best week of my life." proving the success of the course.

This is another example of how Rotary engages with the younger generation in the Community, and here in Towcester and District,  the Rotary Club of Towcester is very keen to nurture this and help the youth within the district achieve their true potential.

If you are, or know of someone who would be interested in attending a RYLA course, then visit the Rotary GB&I website www.rotarygbi.org and search for RYLA or log on to www.towcester-rotary.org.uk or send an email to secretary-towcester-rotary.org.uk for further information. Selection for 2026 will be underway shortly.

Ready for RYLA 2025 day

This is ROTARY YOUNG LEADER AWARD, a week's course spent at Grafham Water teaching young adults more about self confidence and leadership.  The Rotary Club of Towcester has a candidate.

Who looks after the carers.

Towcester Rotary Club

22 x Young Carers from Northampton, Towcester and Kettering enjoyed a day out on a Sailability course at Pitsford Reservoir. These young adults between the ages of 12 and 17 who are all carers spending 24/7 looking after parents and or siblings, are losing so much of their childhood, not having the experiences that most teenagers of their age go through. But for a day they were relieved of their caring duties and given the opportunity of being teenagers.

Many thanks to Northampton Sailability, whose members donated their time to giving these young carers a day to remember and to Northampton Sailing Club for the use of their facilities.

They spent the day at Sailability on and mostly in Pitsford reservoir, sailing dinghies, canoeing, paddle boarding and canoe-maraning (that's two canoes joined together like a catamaran).  The weather wasn't brilliant with a shortage of wind, so sailing was slow, but unperturbed, these young carers, who initially said that they didn't want to get wet, soon got into their surroundings, literally and established new friendships and enjoyed their day on the water.

If you are interested in finding out more about Rotary and the Towcester Club in particular, then why not get in touch, come along and meet the members. You will be surprised at what a lively bunch of Rotarians we are..

We meet at the Saracens Head Hotel, Towcester on most Thursday evenings, so send an email to secretary@towcester-rotary.org.uk
