Special Event - Purple 4 Polio
POLIOMYELITIS - defined as "a potentially crippling viral disease transmitted through contaminated food or water or contact with an infected person". A few of us may be 'young' enough to remember the IRON LUNG or children crippled by this dilatating disease using crutches to move around.
For over 35 years, Rotary members have been committed to fighting to eradicate polio across the world.
The number of polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just 2 with over 2.5 billion children receiving vaccinations thanks to the help of Rotary, The Bill Gates Foundation and the World Health Organisation have supported Vaccinations and continue on an annual basis, globally.
Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland organise many activities to raise money and awareness of the Rotary End Polio Now campaign. The Purple4Polio suggested activities use colour purple in it's core emblem, as it signifies the colour of the dye painted on a child’s little finger to confirm that they have received their life saving polio vaccine.
The 24th October each year has been designated Purple4Polio Day and with this in mind the Rotary Club of Towcester, hosted by The Towcester Leisure Centre, is organizing a Cycle4Polio static cycle day on Saturday, 25th October from 8.00am to 4.30pm. Two static cycles will be located in the foyer of the Towcester Leisure Centre and we invite members of the public to come along and support us in helping to raise money for the Polio cause. All monies raised will be donated to the Rotary End Polio Now campaign.
Entry costs £5 per slot, although we encourage participants to raise money through individual sponsorship. There will be a prize kindly donated by the Towcester Leisure Centre of a £25 voucher to be spent in the Centre for the person who raises the most money.
The event is set for 34 x 25-minute shifts starting at 8.00am and finishing at 4.30pm. To enter collect your entry form from Reception at The Towcester Leisure Centre or please send an email to <howardwinfield@towcester-rotary.org.uk> for further details or visit the Rotary Club’s web site www.towcester-rotary.org.uk
