As a first-year teacher with the Indianapolis Teaching Fellows, you may be eligible to enroll in the TNTP AmeriCorps Program. AmeriCorps is a national network of service programs that connects more than 100,000 Americans each year to serve our country’s most critical needs in areas including environmental issues, disaster relief and education.
Upon successfully completing their first year of teaching in a high-need school, Fellows enrolled in the TNTP AmeriCorps Program will be eligible for several financial benefits:
An education award of up to $7,395. AmeriCorps awards can be used for your first year of Marian tuition, repayment of federal student loans and/or for future educational costs at schools that accept federal financial aid.
Postponing repayment of federal student loans. As an AmeriCorps member, you may be eligible to pause repayment of any outstanding federal student loans. That means you would not have to make any federal student loan payments during your year of service as a first year teacher with Indianapolis Teaching Fellows. After successfully completing the year, AmeriCorps would repay any interest accrued during that time.
In addition to these financial benefits, AmeriCorps members receive special training that prepares them to incorporate service learning and volunteerism into their teaching, including opportunities to participate in special activities such as AmeriCorps Week and the Martin Luther King Day of Service in their local communities.
Participation in AmeriCorps is not guaranteed and is dependent on federal funding and provided on a first come, first serve basis. The amount of the award is also subject to change based on federal funding. As a result, candidates will be notified as soon as eligibility is determined, most likely at Pre-Service Training.
AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more than 1000,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and community organizations.
TNTP AmeriCorps
Established in 2007, the TNTP AmeriCorps Program helps Fellows broaden their impact within their schools and communities. Teaching Fellows who enroll in AmeriCorps complete their service as AmeriCorps members by teaching the students who need them most in high-need subjects and schools.
Service Benefits
The TNTP AmeriCorps Program provides Fellows with training and resources for service learning and volunteer recruitment. The program also connects Fellows to each other by organizing community service opportunities through partnerships with local organizations.
Segal Education Award - As a Fellow enrolled in AmeriCorps through the TNTP AmeriCorps Program, you will be eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award after successful completion of your first year of teaching. The education award can be used towards any type of classes at qualified educational institutions or to repay qualified federal student loans. (Note: The Education Award cannot be used to pay for ITF Enrollment or PST expenses.)
Loan Forbearance - You may also put pause payments on qualified federal student loans (loan forbearance) while serving in AmeriCorps. Once you successfully complete the school year, AmeriCorps will pay any interest you accrued.

In order to receive an AmeriCorps award, you must satisfy all TNTP AmeriCorps Program requirements, including meeting all program deadlines, and remain in good standing with your Teaching Fellows program, your certification program/TNTP Academy and your school district.
