Learning brings us so much JOY in First Grade! Take a look at what we are doing inside (and outside) the classroom! Scroll down to find information and photos of the students' class work and projects.
Last week we began working with fractions in math class. Students have been learning about attributes and of 2-D and 3-D shapes, and now they are learning the definition of half and fourths. They learned how to identify equal shares when partitioning shapes. In ELA we finished up our unit called "Grace." Students enjoyed their time reading a chapter book leveled reader about a girl named Grace. In the unit they learned about various spellings for /s/, /k/, /j/, and /n/ sounds. Students also learned about pronouns and prepositions in order to improve their writing skills and sentence structure. In Social Studies the students learned about the trail blazer and pioneer Daniel Boone, who helped open up "the west" for the United States. We also learned about the Louisiana Purchase. We had fun celebrating Earth Day last week. Students learned the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling, and put it into practice by repurposing recycled items with some design projects in the classroom. In Bible Study we learned about the ministry of Peter, Stephen, and other early members of the church. We saw how God helps when we have a problem, like how he helped Peter in prison. We can go to God for strength!Â
This week we are focusing on fractions in math! Students will learn how to partition shapes to make fractions. We will also connect fractions to telling time to "the half hour." In ELA we are beginning our last unit for the year. Students will read a leveled reader called "Kay and Martez," and they will learn about Martez's Mexican culture as he shares it with his friend Kay. We will learn to read and spell long vowel teams this week, including the "ai" and "ay" spellings on our spelling list. Students will learn "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." In Bible Study we will continue to learn about the growth of the early church through the ministry of Jesus' followers. We can put our trust in God to help us share the Good News with others. In Social Studies we are learning about Lewis and Clark this week. We will learn how they were hired to find a route to the Pacific Ocean, and we will learn about their expedition. Last but not least, we will finish getting ready for May Day this week! Â
