Inpatient Mental Health services typically provide an overnight stay with staff that are able to take care of you 24/7.
There are several different types of inpatient care, which includes hospitalizations, PMIC, and ICF/ID. For more in-depth information about inpatient Mental Health treatment and how it works, click here. For more information on each type of setting and level of care, click here.
Watch the short video below for more information about Inpatient services and what to expect.
Common reasons for getting inpatient mental health treatment (from OpenCounseling.com)
Bipolar mania
Severe depression
Self-harming behavior
Suicidal or homicidal intent or a plan
Psychosis (delusions and hallucinations)
Escalating reckless or impulsive behavior
Altered mental status due to substance use
Iowa frequently has a shortage of available inpatient beds. This makes it difficult to get admitted for inpatient services, especially if voluntarily. Inpatient facilities often have to limit care to the people with the most severe symptoms. Those admitted voluntarily may often meet the standard to be committed involuntarily.
For information on Involuntary Commitment, click here. For information on Iowa's Involuntary Commitment proceedings, click here.
Hospitalization for mental health is for short-term care. Stays at a hospital for mental health reasons typically last for less than 30 days. In a psych unit or mental health hospital, you are given around-the-clock care. Some providers will also have inpatient services for substance use disorders. When you go to the emergency room for a mental health concern, they may admit you to the psych ER or psych unit depending on the severity of your situation. You can also admit yourself directly to a mental/behavioral health hospital.
If you can't trust yourself to stay safe and need to be monitored
If you are having a mental health crisis and need emergency services
If you are actively suicidal or homicidal
If your mental illness symptoms become too overwhelming and outpatient services are not enough
If you are actively hallucinating or you are unable to get your mood swings under control in an outpatient setting
If you are unable to break the cycle of addiction in an outpatient setting
If you need to escape for a few days; a short hospital stay where your basic needs are taken care of can provide you the break you need for your mental health.
If you need to get quick, comprehensive medical care; hospitals will have all the specialists you need for treating mental health. THey will also be able to set up aftercare for you to prepare you for when you leave
If you are not sure if you meet the criteria for inpatient hospitalization, contact your local mental hospital and they will assess your current needs and make the appropriate recommendations.
