A: Sometimes this could be a symptom of liver issues, or blood sugar issues. Generally, people that wake up between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM have some issue with blood sugar. If you have a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), you might be able to track to see if you are becoming hypoglycemic during that time, which then can lead to a cortisol surge where your body will wake you up to try to get more sugar on board naturally leading to cortisol production.
Eating more protein and fat throughout the day can help with blood sugar balance. For some people eating some carbs in the evening can also help. Myo-inositol and chromium can also help with blood sugar balancing.
If the night wakings are frequent a reason behind that could be ammonia toxicity.
The Saccharomyces boulardii, Carnitine, and Magnesium we are taking during the program can help with that. Another supplement that can help with ammonia buildup is Ornithine.
Most people resolve their sleep-related issues in the program within the first few weeks. By the time we get to week 5, if working on your blood sugar balance and following the program have not improved your sleep, be sure to review the Sleep Solutions section in the Specific Symptom Solutions Guide (in the portal under the Handouts tab). It contains more information on causes for night wakings.
