A: There are a variety of different magnesium salts on the market. Magnesium is usually bound to a second type of ingredient, to be properly absorbed in the body. Magnesium is responsible for part of the effect, but the second salt works as a carrier to transport the magnesium to different body parts, and it might have some physiological effects as well.
I will usually see carbonate used for support in balancing stomach acidity. But I generally recommend citrate for people with Hashimoto’s, because of its specific benefits. It can be helpful for those with constipation, to move our bowels, as well as for sleep and anxiety. It's also the magnesium form that was studied in Hashimoto's specifically, to improve the appearance and get rid of some of the damage and inflammation on the actual thyroid gland, when used for two to three years. So, those are the main reasons that I recommend it. Most people with Hashimoto's tend to be constipated and anxious, and some have trouble sleeping, as well as cramps, so that's why citrate is usually my preferred version.
If you prefer a different form, and if you feel better on it, please go with your gut and utilize that. I always recommend listening to your body, for your individual chemistry, to help determine which form might be the best one for you. So, I would encourage you to keep taking that. I'm not sure if it will have the same benefits on the thyroid gland though, because that hasn't been studied.
