A: Magnesium Citrate is known to help with constipation. We generally recommend this form as constipation can be a common problem with Hashimoto’s. But, for some people who are prone to loose stools, its bowel-moving properties may not be desirable. You may want to try a different form of magnesium, and see how you do with it. Magnesium glycinate may be helpful for those who experience loose stools as it is less likely to affect bowel movements, however, in some cases it may worsen feelings of nervousness, so that’s something to be mindful of and monitor, if you decide to try it.
As for taking P5P to help counteract Magnesium Citrate’s bowel-moving effect, P5P is also a prokinetic, which means that it helps with motility and bowel regularity. If you want to continue taking P5P for its other benefits, and are taking a standard dose, such as 50 mg, that should be fine along with the Adrenal Support supplement, as the amount of P5P in Adrenal Support is only 5mg. Generally, doses of P5P may range between 50-200 mg/day; above 300 mg/day, potential side effects and toxicity have been reported. So, you would only be taking 55 mg altogether.
Toxicity typically manifests as symptoms of peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain, numbness, tremors, twitching), gastrointestinal issues, skin issues, sleep disorders, sensitivity to sound, light, smell, or touch, nausea, dizziness and lack of coordination and muscle control. Start with a low dose and go slow, and you may also want to talk to your health practitioner to see what is best for you when it comes to taking P5P.
