A: I have an article on zinc on my website that gives you a little bit more details on that. I also recommend specific types of zinc, like zinc picolinate. I don't like a lot of them, because sometimes the different ingredients can impair one another's absorption. Generally, about 30 milligrams of zinc is right for most people. I've used even up to 50. However, if you're using above 30 there is a school of thought that believes you may need to supplement copper, just because zinc can deplete copper stores.
However, some people with Hashimoto's may actually have copper toxicity. Copper toxicity is something that can present a variety of symptoms: anxiety, panic attacks, acne are potentially some of them. I have more information about copper toxicity for you: a Copper Toxicity Guide and a Copper Toxicity Screen. I typically don't recommend supplementing with copper, unless you are sure that you don't have copper toxicity because you don't want to make it worse. Generally, I would say 30 milligrams of zinc for a few months at a time should not lead to copper deficiency.
