Q: I’ve tried several thyroid medications, but still struggling with low energy, brain fog, etc. I’m concerned that I could have Schmidt Syndrome or another endocrine issue. Do you recommend ACTH stimulation testing for the adrenal response?
A: I would recommend that you get tested for Addison’s disease (which is an autoimmune disease that causes the adrenals to be destroyed), to see if that could be what you are currently dealing with.
ACTH and cortisol tests are not going to reveal Addison’s until 90 percent of your adrenals have been destroyed. Instead, you’ll want to ask for the 21 hydroxylase antibody test, which can detect Addison’s way before the adrenals have been destroyed.
