Q: I have low TSH. I've started taking black cumin seed, but I read that it can lower TSH. Should I continue taking it? Do you have other suggestions in terms of supplements, herbs, or foods for low TSH in Hashimoto's?
A: Black cumin seed doesn't necessarily work to lower TSH like a medication or a hormone would. It works more on the feedback loop. Carnitine can also be helpful for optimizing or rebalancing the TSH. The ashwagandha in the Adrenal Support may be an issue for you if you already have a low TSH because it can lower it further.
I'm not sure if you are taking thyroid hormones. But if you are, it would be an obvious thing to adjust your thyroid hormone dosage. In some cases, people with Hashimoto's may swing back between high TSH and low TSH in the early stages when their bodies are damaging a lot of the thyroid gland and that's causing dumping of the thyroid hormone into your system. Maybe you could send some information to the team and let them know if you have been tested for Graves’ antibodies. If you have, we have an article on Graves’ that has more potentially helpful information.
