A: Three drops of Metagenics contain about 294 micrograms of iodine. Based on that, with two drops you’re getting 200 micrograms of iodine per day, which is actually a pretty good dose. This is the dose that was studied in about 400 people with Hashimoto's. They were followed for a long time while they looked at their daily iodine doses of up to 200 micrograms per day and monitored their thyroid antibodies levels. They found that this dose was potentially helpful.
Generally, I don't like to go above 300 micrograms. Something above 300 micrograms can be problematic. 200 micrograms is a good place to shoot for.
I think the only concern is making sure that you're not overdoing it with the foods that you're eating. And there are some topical products that can contain iodine as well.
If you are deficient in it, that is not very common, but of course everybody's a little bit different. So, the supplement is generally going to be safe, but I would not recommend taking it and then adding other sources of iodine to it. I wouldn't recommend eating seaweed or other iodine-rich foods because iodine is a narrow therapeutic index supplement nutrient. Too much of it can be inflammatory on the thyroid gland.
I have an article on iodine on my website to give you a little more guidance and insight on that.
