Main Idea
George Washington Carver is a peanut scientist.
He was known as a plant doctor.
He was known as one of the most helpful and creative scientists for his time.
He turned peanuts into so many different products.
He was not very strong and often got sick.
The school was only for white kids and only one college would accept him.
After finding he was black, they said that he could not attend that college.
He and some other people went to the junkyard to make a laboratory in the school, Iowa State Experimental Station.
He noticed and taught that if you put a plant in the same place for two years in a row it will not grow as well as last year.
He developed crop rotation that farmers use today.
He taught black farmers how to plant and make other things out of plants.
Background Information:

Slavery was legal.
The civil war was going on.
People were segregated.
The Jim Crow law that meant black people couldn’t do some things.
Childhood:
He was kidnapped by outlaws at one week old.
He had the biggest house in Diamond Grove, Missouri in the 1870’s and slaves had really small houses.
Obstacles and challenges:
Slaves and black people were “second class citizens.”
His mother Mary and George were taken to sell as slaves.
Relevance today:
He made over 300 products with peanuts and more than 75 with pecans, and also more than 100 out of sweet potatoes.
