Main idea:
Ernest Everett Just was a marine biologist. He figured out how life begins from an egg by studying marine worms. Ernest received a medal called the Spingarn Medal, which is given to an African-American who has done amazing things. Dr. Just won the first Spingarn Medal in 1915. He was studying marine invertebrates back then. Just's research led him to say that all parts of a cell influence what the cell does.
Background information:
Reconstruction just ended and Jim Crow started which meant segregation. Dr Just could not work when he wanted to.

Ernest lived in a lot of places as a kid.
Ernest watched fishermen catch fish. Ernest`s dad died when Ernest was four years old.

Ernest got typhoid fever and lost his ability to read. Studying was hard! Ernest`s mom's school burned down. When a clubhouse was built for Marine Biological Laboratory he was not allowed in the clubhouse.
