1.1.10 Evaluate different methods of delivering user training.
Delivering user training can be handled in variety of ways depending on the size of the business, training budget and timing. To take advantage of advanced IT systems, it is imperative that companies and institutions provide appropriate training for its stakeholders.
1. Self-Instruction or self-study
this method allows the user to learn at his/her own pace to achieve mastery of the subject. There are plenty of resources available in print or electronic (online) that users can use to improve their skills. This method is cheap as there are no tuition fees to pay and offers enough flexibility for the user to manage his/her own time. Its disadvantages include the absence of expert's guidance or support, which forces the learners to motivate themselves to learn and be successful in achieving the set goals.
2. Formal classes
this method offers interactive setting that promotes open and free discussion between students and instructor, and most importantly interactions among students. It allows direct interaction with the expert breaking communication barriers among learners and instructors, though may disadvantage shy members.
3. Remote/ distance learning/ online training
This method allows participants to participate in high quality courses around the world with just a computer and an internet connection. Access to virtual classroom is not time bound and resources are limitless. Resources include online access to reference databases, video lectures, course materials and more. This method requires learners to manage their own time to make the most out of the learning opportunity. Online trainings come in synchronous and asynchronous format, both with very different demands or requirements from the learners.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each of the methods in delivering user training.
Compare synchronous and asynchronous online training.
