Read the following extract from a fiction story. After you finish reading it, answer the questions below:
Why Not?
My brother asks me why I photograph the sky. He asks to see the picture, and I hand him my phone.
“Why?” he says, because when he looks back up at the horizon all he sees is a Tuesday morning. He doesn’t see how fast the sun has risen behind the clouds. He doesn’t see the way the cotton layers have peeled away to reveal spindles of light straining to brush the grass.
I’m so busy contemplating the sky that I almost forget his question. I glance at the sunrise on my phone before I put it back in my pocket. I’m not sure how to answer him.
I could say how this sunrise, this Tuesday morning, will never be seen again by any human being, ever. It’ll spiral up and fly away with each passing minute. Lost to the wind, unless someone sticks out a hand to catch it, clutches it tight so that even if it’s been torn and crumpled it can’t slip away.
I could tell him about the way the houses wink at me in the orange light. About the sun-soaked grass, the tiny blades dancing in their sparkling dew dresses. I’d point at the bare tree branches stretching up to reach the sky. I’d tell him that this Tuesday morning is sitting in my pocket now, safe from time.
He’d probably laugh at me, tell me to stop worrying about taking photographs of everything. “Live in the moment.” And I’d laugh right back at him. When I’m old, when my face is tissue-paper tearing with every smile, I won’t have to grasp frantically at my memories as they fall away like sand in an hourglass. They’ll be safe, stored in gilded crystal frames on my desk instead of the fragile murk in my mind. Tuesday morning, the single moment of the sun being carried up over the hills by purple clouds, will be frozen forever. Memories slip away with time, I’d tell him. But photographs, they’re permanent.
But I don’t say any of that when I look back at him. Instead, I take out the photograph again, of the clouds rolling and tumbling across the sky. Sun like a halo over the hills, trees waltzing with each other to a sudden gust of wind. A few tiny pixels on my phone.
“Why?” my brother asks again.
“Well,” I say, not bothering to hide my smile, “why not?”
1) Identify as many language features as you can.
2) Analyse how the writer sees the personal value of taking a photograph and write an essay based answer.
In your answer you should include examples of techniques used in the text, and explain their effects.
(These might include, but are not limited to: dialogue, metaphor, rhetorical question)
No due date but it is expected you will complete in a day.

You will write a series of responses to different resources one of which includes your novel Chappy.
The main task is to produce developed responses to the ideas you find in the texts.
While you are home PLEASE READ CHAPPY and continue to FILL OUT THE READING LOG.
Ask yourself these questions as you read your novel.
What reaction did the text provoke in me? How did I identify with this text? What extra meaning did it have for me due to my personal experiences in life so far? What did this text help me understand about the world, society or human nature? How did the ideas in this text challenge my thinking when compared to other texts on the same topic or other experiences linked to this topic? As a reader, what did I think the writer/director did well? What did I think they could have improved? Why?

You are going to create a video about a character, idea, theme or a movie technique from our movie study of Hunt for the Wilder People. You will need to record yourself for this assessment and present as if you were teaching others about your character or idea.
Firstly, you need to watch the movie in your own time. Watch it twice (a relaxed view and then a note-taking view). We will discuss further in class what a note-taking view is.
Once you've watched the movie, you must BRAINSTORM your kaupapa/character/idea/theme. Submit your brainstorm/plan to arianareweti@gmail.com by 12pm, 12 May 2020.
Watch the youtube clips attached of some video essays which will be used to give you some ideas about how to discuss your topics
Video essay about an idea example
Video essay about a technique example

He could really handle money,
my father-in-law, he threw most of it away -
I'd never seen this before.
He fumbled in his pocket, it tumbled out,
note after crumpled note, he'd fill your hand -
what was his was yours;
and I saw to my delight,
he made me understand, the scraps of coloured paper
it truly merely was.
"Rich, eh?" I hear him say, and laugh,
"Not anymore!" Rich alright, that man, in another
currency, richest of all.
Read the above poem about Grandpa and answer the following two questions in your online book:
Explain how Grandpa's attitude to money tells you about the kind of person he is. Give evidence from the text to support your answer.
Explain the link between the title of the poem (Grandpa's Gift) and the meaning of the words 'another currency' (lines 11 - 12)
