In fifth grade, students will be reading music with ukuleles, xylophones, glockenspiels, metallophones, and boomwhackers. Students will explore through singing and partwork, rhythmic identification through rhythm games, listening, and sharing talents. We will learn basic chords on the ukulele, and dive into the basics of written music theory. Listening activities will explore world music, music history, and expand instrumental knowledge and identification. Students will share what they've learned in their quarterly assemblies!
RHYTHM Review previous concepts of rhythm and meter, introduce 6/8 meter, syncopated rhythms, and dotted quarter-eighth combinations
MELODY Review all previous concepts, intro to La-based minor, Fa and Ti.
FORM Review forms, popular song forms (verse/refrain/bridge)
TEXTURE & HARMONY Three and four part rounds and canons, I-IV-V bassline, arpeggiated accompaniment
INSTRUMENTS Reading music with ukuleles, bells, and boomwhackers
OTHER Treble clef, bass clef, metric counting, dictation, music history
