IMPORTANT FAQs RELATING TO COURSE SELECTION

I’m planning on taking a course in summer school.  Should I include it in my selections?

If you are definitely going to take the course at summer school, DO NOT include it in your course selection. Add a NOTE (click the "Review Course Selections") state the course code you plan to take at summer school.   Please be mindful that if you do not complete the course in summer school, it may be difficult to add the course to your timetable next year.  In the event you decide to take a summer school course after course selection, that you your alternate will replace it!

There is NO need to submit any TDSB summer school report cards as these marks will automatically be uploaded.  For any NON TDSB course taken over the summer, you must submit a final report card to guidance.

TDSB summer school details (course listings & registration process) come out in the Spring. Please monitor YMCI Guidance - ️ Night/Summer School/ eLearning Day School. A Guidance Google Classroom will post will also be made once information is released.

How do I change my Civ/Car or English compulsory course to another course because I plan to take it in summer school?

Select [+Course], on the next page scroll up to the top right and change the subject filter to a specific subject or discipline (which will show ALL subjects)

I am going into Grade 11. Why can't I find the English class ENG3U1 or ENG3C1?

There is a new English class replacing ENG3U1/ENG3C1 next year - NBE3U1/NBE3C1 (English: Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices)  These are the appropriate Grade 11 English classes to take for university (NBE3U1) and college(NBE3C1) destinations.

Do I have to choose an alternate (how many) and how will these choices be used?

Yes, you MUST select 2 alternate courses. They will be used if the school is unable to schedule all 8 of your selections (due to a course being cancelled, full or in conflict with other requests).  It will also be used to replace any summer school credits earned!

Is it important that I submit on the first day; will all my courses be guaranteed?

It is NOT first come, first serve.  We tally all the submissions after the deadline to determine what courses will be offered.

You are better off to think carefully and be sure when you finally click "Submit".

Can I change my course requests after I have submitted them?

After you have submitted your course requests through myBlueprint, the next opportunity to request a change will be at the start of the school year. Further information will be available at the end of August via Semester 1 Info .

How many French Immersion (FI) courses should I select?

It is recommended that students select as many FI courses that are offered in gr. 9 & 10.  FI options are limited in senior grades. Students require a total of 10 French Immersion credits (including FIF4U5) in order to earn their French Immersion Certificate (11 credits to earn the Honours French Immersion Certificate.)

What is "Full Disclosure"?

Full Disclosure is the last day a student can drop a class without it showing up on the transcript. This date is 5 days after the midterm report cards are released. May 1, 2024 is the Semester 2 Full Disclosure deadline

When a course is dropped AFTER the full disclosure date the course code appears on a student's transcript displaying their mid-term mark with a "w" indicating that the student withdrew from the course.

Do colleges and universities look at grade 11 & 12 marks?

The admissions process is considered a "rolling process" meaning that even though a student applies between October and January, the admission decisions are made over a time period from November through the end of May. Some programs may look at Grade 11 marks if they do not have a Grade 12 mid-term or final mark in a prerequisite course initially, but do not turn down students due to a Grade 11 mark - they will simply wait until later in the process to review semester 1 final marks and/or semester 2 mid-term marks before making a decision.

Some university programs do not consider Grade 11 marks at any point in the process.

Does repeating a course impact my chances of getting into university?

Policies related to repeating a course vary from program to program - even within the same university/college. Some will take the highest mark of multiple repeats of a course, some will take only a first attempt, while others may take an average of the two marks. You should consult the websites of the university/college programs that you are considering. There is also a helpful resource called the Guidance Regional Dialogues that summarizes a variety of university admission policies. This may be accessed on our website at University

In order to receive early conditional offers, do I have to have certain courses in Semester 1?

No. The university/college admission process is designed in such a way that it does not matter which semester your courses are scheduled.

Does taking a private school course, TDSB night school course, TDSB summer school course or any other NON-York Mills course impact my chances of getting an offer from college or university?

Each university/college program has their own policy related to this question. Some say they "prefer students take their pre-requisite courses at their regular day school."

Must I choose only "university" level courses if I intend on applying to university?

The answer is rather complicated. You MUST take "university" level English (ENG3U1 and ENG4U1) for sure. For most Science and Business programs you also likely have to take university level math (MCR3U1 and then MHF4U1 and maybe MCV4U1). If you are interested in Humanities programs at university you may absolutely take college level math and still go to university. You can also take college level business courses in Grade 11 and attend university.

What you should be doing is using myBlueprint to plan your Grade 12 courses first, making sure that any university prerequisites for programs that you are interested in are included. That way you can see which Grade 11 courses you must take in order to take those Grade 12 courses. You can check for university prerequisites using myBlueprint or the Ontario Universities Info website.

As a general rule, all pathways are kept open if you take ENG3U1, MCR3U1, SBI3U1, SPH3U1, SCH3U1 in Grade 11. Taking any other open, college, university/college courses in Grade 11 is fine.

What is a "part-time" student and will it impact my chances of getting into university/college?

A part-time student is one who is enrolled in their regular day school with less than 3 courses in a semester (eLearning Day School counts as a "York Mills" course). You must be a full-time student if you are under the age of 18 unless you are in your last semester of high school needing less than 3 credits to graduate.

Some university/college programs have indicated that a student's ability to maintain a full-time course load in high school may influence their decisions related to offering admission to a program.  If you are concerned about this, please connect with the university program admissions department for clarification.
