A diagnosis is a professional way of describing a pattern of strengths and difficulties that a student is experiencing. It helps identify what might be getting in the way of learning, behaviour, or emotional well-being. Diagnoses are based on clear criteria found in medical or psychological manuals like the DSM-5-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Diagnoses don't label a child as "less able." Instead, they provide a common language that families, teachers, and healthcare providers can use to understand a student's needs and plan effective supports.
Giving clarity about the nature of a student’s challenges
Assisting schools in planning the right accommodations or interventions
Connecting families to community services or funding
Reducing blame, stress, and confusion
