Getting Started

Four Ways to Access New Google Sites

1. From Google Drive >New >More >Sites

2. Go to Google Apps Launcher (aka Waffle) - >Sites (you will see the sites you own)

3. Type sites.new in the Omnibox

4. Enter the URL in a browser: sites.google.com

Create a New Site using a Blank Template

FInd and click on the colored + button

Title your Site (2 spots in the upper left-hand corner)

Top left: Untitled Site and Enter Site Name

Untitled Site: (YOUR personal name, ) (click on this it will auto -copy it)

Enter Site Name: What visitors will see (can be the same or different)

Title it Welcome

Quick Tour on the Three TABS - INSERT - PAGES - THEMES

INSERT add text, images, docs, etc.

PAGES Create pages and manage your page organization

THEMES Set the overall color and font scheme (6 themes each has five colors & three font styles)

Customize the HEADER

  1. Header Type cover, large banner, banner, title only

  2. Change Image background from the theme, use the Gallery with Google images, upload your own image from your computer or Google Drive, also use search feature (search for classroom) These images are labeled for commercial use with modification.

  3. Move the editable header around

The BODY of the Page

Add a Text Box and Image

  1. Insert - Image

  2. Insert - Text Box

Adjust the text box - grab the blue circular handles make it shorter, wider, center/L/R

Edit the text: Bold ,Italic, alignment, Number or Bullet, make the image/picture a link, or delete

Ellipsis: Line spacing, Increase or Decrease the indent, Strikethrough, Code font or Clear ormatting

Vocabulary ALERT

Each of these boxes with content is called a horizontal section

  1. Each can be edited individually

  2. Make adjustments to just that section

  3. JAZZ each horizontal section up: to the left is a painter pallet

    1. Regular, Emphasis 1, 2 or an image behind it. (Add a color to make it pop out)

Adding Content to Your Google Site

Add NEW PAGES

PAGES Tab

Click on the circle with the plus sign

Type in the new page name

Add LINKS

Add a hyperlink www.tcea.org can press enter or highlight it and click the link button

Embed URL Try tcea.org or GoBotGo (brings up an image of the website)

Make text into a link (highlight the words, click on the link, type in or copy/paste the link

CALENDAR Page

Insert a Google Calendar

Google Embeds the Calendar (show all the calendars that you are allowed to access)

This will bring up all your personal and secondary calendars

Sharing Settings - Make this Calendar Public (choose to do this ahead of time)

**Sites will let you see it, but it will not be viewable if you have not changed the access

Move it and resize it

Default view- Agenda View

To make adjustments Click on the calendar - choose a different view: week or month

DOCS in a FOLDER

Drop in a single file and you will get an Image of a file

But : What about multiple files? (25 docs)

Go to DRIVE FOLDER

Add a folder of documents

Set the Sharing Settings (anyone with the link can view)

Drops the entire folder (pretty cool)

It will be a Live link (Add a new file, it will automatically pull that new file in there!!!!!)

PHOTO Gallery (this is pretty cool)

Imbed the Drive Folder

Change the list view to the grid view (to see all the photos in the folder)

A Variety of Things you Need to Know

Horizontal or Side NAVIGATION

Notice we have a horizontal menu

To the left of the site name, hover : flower gear

TOP (Horizontal) or SIDE NAVIGATION (Vertical)

You can also go to the 3 dots (hide it from navigation)

Grab it and put it on top of another page (drop down)

To get rid of it (drag it down)

Add Editor’s ICON This is your regular Google Sharing options window

PUBLISH

Up to this point, no one can see this site. Have to click on the blue box: publish.

  1. GIVE IT A NAME (will pick up some stuff, like your domain)

  2. Has to be unique (blue checkmark if you are good to go)

  3. Who can see your site: your domain or anybody in the world

  4. Allow my site to appear in search results (if you don’t check it, you have to give them the link)

  5. Once you publish it...it is live!

  6. Do have publish options

  7. If you make changes and you don’t hit publish (your changes will not be added) Have to REPUBLISH


Kinda cool about the New Google - you can rename your site anytime you wish.

View on different devices: (computer view, tablet view and phone view)

When you are finished, hit the X

HIDE from Navigation

If you are working on a page and need it NOT to be viewable

Go to >Pages >Skinny Snowman > Hide from Navigation
