Media Technology Arts
St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School offers an Enriched Arts Program in Media Technology Arts (MTA).
Grade 8 students are invited to apply.
The MTA Program is an auditioned Media Arts and Communications Technology stream designed to inspire students to become “creative leaders” equipped with a design thinking mindset and the digital skills for success in our ever evolving social landscape.
This six credit / four year program nurtures twenty-first century competencies such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, problem solving, and communication as seen through a design lens. Students will become fluent in the digital-visual language critical for success in any media/design career.
Focus is placed on providing ambitious students with opportunities to bring their creative ideas to life. Programming combines both Communications Technology credits and Media Arts credits and promotes ideation, collaboration and practical experimentation.
Key Features:
6 credit course
Classes are team-taught in the MTA computer lab filled with new iMacs for each student and premium industry level software.
Junior and Senior double-cohort classes collaborate on a variety of projects, both in group and mentor-mentee capacities.
The Program is rooted in the philosophy that innovation comes about through tireless intellectual curiosity, commitment to developing ideas, an ability to accept repeated failures as the price of ultimate success, a relentless work ethic, and a mindset that encourages not just ideas but action - the MTA program embraces this ideology to fully engage students in looking beyond the obvious for unique solutions that can be applied in all areas of study.
Note:
Grade 8 students are invited to apply for our Enriched Arts programs directly from grade 8.
The application process consists of a portfolio submission (See Audition Criteria).
Successful candidates are selected not only on technological and artistic skill, but on their creative thinking skills and willingness to learn.
Learn More:
Each year students are challenged with a unique set of projects that build on the previous year’s knowledge and techniques, culminating in Grade 12 students creating a semester-long “thesis” project. By focusing on their chosen discipline in Media Arts (illustration, animation, photography/video, or graphic design) students build the skills and portfolio that directly prepare them for the post-secondary program of their choice.
MTA students take part in a variety of workshops and local excursions that immerse them in Toronto’s vibrant artistic and cultural scene. Senior MTA students also enjoy the opportunity to travel on an overnight excursion to a cultural destination beyond the city—past trips have even included New York City!
