Let's learn all about the Sun! The sun is an enormous star that we get all our energy from.
First, watch this video all about the amazing sun.
Next, tell someone in your family 3 things you learned about the sun. (the sun is centre of the solar system, planets orbit the sun, the sun is really hot, the sun keeps earth warm, the sun helps plants grow, the sun is made of gas, 1 million earths could fit inside the sun, etc.)
Words to know:
orbit: The path that planets take around the sun. All planets travel around the sun.
solar system: The sun is the star in the middle of our solar system and all the 8 planets orbit (travel) around it.
enormous: Enormous means really, really big!
In this story, George learns how to become a sun safe superstar. (4:35 min)
Check out this video to see how the Sunwise kids prepare for a safe and fun day in the sun. (Note: to shorten the video and focus only on the sun safety tips start the clip at 44 seconds.)
Let's recap what we've learned about staying safe in the sun. Ask your child to tell someone in your family about how they plan to play safely outside this summer. If they have trouble remembering some of the strategies have them refer to the pictures below. Encourage your child to use a complete sentence when talking about each sun safety tip. For example, if your child simply says, "sunscreen" you can model a longer sentence such as, "You can spread sunscreen all over your skin to protect your body from the sun."
