Watch the two videos below and then ask you child the following questions about plants:
What do plants need to grow? (sunlight, soil/nutrients, water, space to grow)
Can you name some parts of a plant? (roots, stem, leaves.....some plants also have flowers and fruit)
Do roots grow up or down? (roots grow down into the soil)
Do stems grow up or down? (stems grow up)
What are some plants that we eat? (e.g., lettuce, carrots, celery, broccoli, banana, etc.)
Begin this activity by asking your child what is happening in each of the pictures. Build upon your child's responses by adding new vocabulary where appropriate. Here's an example of how the first picture might be discussed:
Parent: What is happening in this picture?
Child: There's leaves.
Parent: Yes, there are two leaves. I also see a stem. The leaves and stem have just started to grow. This is called a sprout.
After discussing all of the pictures, ask your child to think about which picture would happen first. Continue to place all pictures in sequence.
Go on a scavenger hunt with your child in your kitchen to find parts of plants that you eat. See if your child can guess what part of the plant each food comes from. For example, carrots are the roots; lettuce is a leaf, lemons are fruit, peas are seeds.
Alternatively, you might choose to use the pictures below. First ask your child what food is shown in each picture. Then ask your child what part of the plant they think it is from (e.g., seed, roots, stem, leaf, flower, fruit).
Answers: carrot (roots); broccoli (flower); corn (seeds); lettuce (leaves); tomato (fruit); celery (stem)
Don't throw away your vegetable scraps!!! Did you know that you can regrow many of them? Watch these videos to find out how.
