Interest: (Global) Coherence

Detail: (Global) coherence is an issue included in many writing rubrics of standard language proficiency tests but is difficult to be evaluated with quantifiable indices such as numbers of connectors. This creates fuzziness for automatic scoring as well as writing assisting tools. Mann & Thompson's Rhetorical Structure Theory and Penn Discourse TreeBank (PDTB) are the main theoretical framework for the analysis of global coherence but there's not yet a reliable parsing method leading to machine judgment that aligns with human judgment.
