In 2024, the United States Foreign Service will celebrate its 100th birthday. The Foreign Service is an important element of the American approach to peacebuilding around the world. Over the last century, our diplomats have been involved in significant events in history – decisions on war and peace, reacting to natural disasters and pandemics, facilitating major treaties, and more.
As AFSA looks back on their century-long history, we invite you to do the same. This year students are asked to explore a topic that touches upon this important history and sheds light on how vital it is for America to have a robust professional corps focused on diplomacy, development, and peace in the national interest.
In your essay, you will select a country or region in which the United States Foreign Service has been involved at any point since 1924 and describe, in 1,500 words or less, how the Foreign Service was successful or unsuccessful in advancing American foreign policy goals – including promoting peace – in this country/region and propose ways in which it might continue to improve those goals in the coming years.
Who: Students in grades 9-12 whose parents are not in the Foreign Service
Amount: $2,500 to the writer of the winning essay, in addition to a paid trip to the nation’s capital from anywhere in the U.S. for the winner and his or her parents, and an all-expense paid educational voyage courtesy of Semester at Sea. Runner-up receives $1,250 and a full tuition to attend a summer session of National Student Leadership Conference’s International Diplomacy program. Due to COVID-19 some prizes may not be claimable immediately.

Learning about a cancer diagnosis – your own or that of a loved one – can cause a storm of emotions, and everyone experiences it differently. We want to know what this experience was like for you.
Did you feel angry, sad, lonely, or maybe something you didn’t expect? What happened in your life, and did it change you or your perspectives?
We invite you to submit a short essay about your experience with cancer for the opportunity to win cash prizes. Since the contest began in 2006, we have received over 7,000 submissions and handed out over $200,000 in prize money to teens.
Over the years we have received stories of triumph and stories of great loss, stories written in times of turbulence, and stories written in times of quiet reflection. Each one has been honest, heartfelt, and unique.

If your parent/legal guardian is a nurse or K-12 employee, at least HALF of your PLU tuition will be covered by PLU-funded scholarships and grants.
Who:
For first-year students admitted and entering for Fall 2021 with a parent or legal guardian who is a full-time employed nurse or K-12 educator, at least half of tuition ($23,408 for the 2021-22 academic year) will be covered by PLU-funded scholarships and grants.
Students must complete the FAFSA, WASFA , or the CSS profile (if an international student) in order to be considered for this commitment.

If these PLU-funded scholarships and/or grants do not equal at least 50% of tuition, then a PLU Grant will be added to a student’s financial aid package to make up the difference.
No separate application is needed to be considered for the Nurse & Educator Dependent Commitment. Our application for admission includes questions about the occupations of parents/guardians. If a student does not complete that section of the application, they can instead complete this Nurse/Educator Parent Occupation Form.
Proof of employment may be required in some situations when we are unable to fully tell where a parent/guardian works or their occupation from the application for admission.
Students do NOT need to major themselves in Education or Nursing to be eligible for this commitment.

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the annual National Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship Awards for students completing twelfth grade (or final high school year) in 2020 who are planning careers in government service. Scholarship applicants must be citizens of the United States. The Trustees and Members of the Foundation, mindful of the significance of the important event in our nation's history that occurred at Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, believe that if our country is to continue to progress, we must have thoroughly trained, dedicated young people to carry on our government's work in future years.
Each interested student is invited to write a one-page essay stating why he or she plans a career in government service including any inspiration to be derived from the leadership of George Washington in his famous crossing of the Delaware. This essay must be accompanied by a recommendation from the high school principal or guidance counselor evaluating the student's achievements, along with transcripts, national testing scores, and other supporting information of the applicant's choice as described in the Official Rules.
We award a variety of scholarships every year. Each scholarship will be paid, as long as the student meets the requirements of the college chosen. Students planning to attend one of the Military Academies or who have been awarded full four-year tuition scholarships will be eligible for an award.
In past years, winners have received an all expenses paid weekend, including transportation and housing, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, to attend the Scholarship Awards Ceremony. All winners were required to attend the Scholarship Awards Program on the last Saturday in April to win their scholarship. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, a decision regarding the date of the 2021 ceremony has not yet been made.
Who: Competition open to all high school senior who are U.S. citizens and are planning careers of service to the United States in local, state, or federal government. All awards are for one year.

Talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not.
Black women are paid 39% less than white men. While this ratio is slowly improving, it won’t reach parity at its current pace for another 100 years.
Black women ask for raises at the same rates as white women, but they get worse results. The pay gap actually widens at higher-age education levels, beginning at age 16 and growing from there.
This problem reflects the systemic inequality that is prevalent in so many fields in America. It’s an issue that will require reform across many fields in the public and private sectors.
As one small part of this, the Opportunity for Black Women Scholarship will be awarded to a Black woman at any education level and field of study.
