College & Career

Middle school is the perfect time to begin setting goals for the future.  At Eastlake Middle school we believe in building a college-going culture and we provide a number of opportunities for students and parents to begin early college and career planning and exploration.  In the fall of 7th and 8th grade, the counseling department presents a guidance lesson to all students entitled “Education Essentials”.  During this presentation, students will learn about the academic success skills and early preparation for college.  In the Spring semester, 7th grade students will meet with their middle school counselor and 8th grade students will meet with their future high school counselor.  During these presentations and small group counseling sessions, each student will develop a 10-year plan to be college and career ready.  Through this lesson, students will learn about middle school promotion and high school graduation requirements as well as college admission requirements such as the A-Gs and how to calculate a GPA.  Students will also learn about selecting middle and high school courses that prepare them for their future goals.

In addition to college planning, students will receive guidance lessons about early career exploration. The counseling department will utilize Thrively and CaCareerZone to help students identify their strengths and begin exploring careers of interest.

The A-G / College Entrance Requirements are a sequence of high school courses that students must complete (with a grade of C or better) to be minimally eligible for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU).

Students take most of their A-G requirements beginning in high school.  However, students can start taking a few A-G requirements beginning in middle school, this includes World Language and math.  On the A-G chart above, the courses highlighted in Yellow are the A-G courses that can be taken in middle school and earn both high school credit and A-G credit.  The courses in RED, are a few of the accelerated, Advanced Placement, and Honors courses that students can take between ELM and our feeder high schools.

In addition to the A-G requirements, students must also satisfy the SUHSD High School graduation requirements.
